Soccer is a challenging contest in a social setting and the emotions of all those involved are going to be affected. For those teams emotionally able to adapt to the contest there will be an advantage, whilst those teams who cannot cope emotionally will usually fail.
Coaches will therefore develop their team’s ability to be aware of, take responsibility for, control and stabilise their emotions – known as emotional intelligence. Because how we feel (our emotions) is determined by how we think, coaches need to know that emotional intelligence begins by teaching players and teams how to think in various situations.
